Studio Above&Below — Quantum Trace 01

Quantum Trace is a computational light installation that gives physical form to quantum uncertainty through light, fluid dynamics and real-time computation. Informed by quantum computing simulations, the work transforms probabilistic processes into an ever-changing choreography of light, revealing patterns that briefly emerge before dissolving again.

At its centre, a dynamic light sculpture combines laser light, fluid dynamics, projection and custom software to generate continuously shifting forms. Driven by a live quantum simulation, the installation remains in a constant state of becoming, where countless potential configurations coexist before momentarily resolving into visible traces. Small environmental changes subtly influence the system, making each moment singular and impossible to repeat.

Surrounding the installation, a series of illuminated collectable wall artworks preserve individual moments from this continuous computational process. Rather than static images, they are traces, unique manifestations of a living system captured at a specific point in time. Alongside them, the underlying quantum simulation is presented as a generative visual composition, revealing the invisible computational processes that shape the physical installation.

Rather than using quantum computing as a technological spectacle, Quantum Trace considers uncertainty as a way of experiencing the world. The installation invites audiences to slow down and observe fleeting conditions that can never be exactly reproduced, offering an alternative to systems driven by optimisation, prediction and certainty.

Developed as a modular installation, Quantum Trace can be presented across galleries, museums, public spaces and light festivals, adapting its spatial configuration while remaining driven by the same real-time generative system. Each presentation becomes a unique manifestation of the work, responding to its architectural and environmental context while remaining part of an ongoing computational artwork.
