Atmospheric Seeing

Atmospheric Seeing is a dynamic computational sculpture that transforms vast cloud data spanning kilometres into a sculptural field of clouds that audiences can physically enter and walk through. Drawing on NASA’s historical atmospheric datasets and local cloud conditions in real time, the work compresses an immense atmospheric field into a 5 × 5 metre environment, shifting planetary-scale information into the scale of the human body.









The work begins with a radical shift in scale. Atmospheric phenomena are observed through satellites, scientific instruments and computational models across territories far beyond human perception. Atmospheric Seeing brings this immense field down to earth, translating data describing the movement, density and formation of clouds into a continuously transforming spatial environment.
The resulting formations are not representations of the local sky, but computational manifestations of atmospheric processes. Historical data is combined with live local conditions, allowing the sculpture to respond continuously to its environmental source.
Visitors become part of this system, walking through and interacting with the cloud field from different positions and perspectives. Their presence introduces a physical relationship to data that would otherwise remain distant and abstract, turning atmospheric information into an experience that can be encountered from within.
Rather than illustrating weather, Atmospheric Seeing asks what happens when atmospheric information becomes spatial and interactive, when we can move through it rather than simply observe it. The work creates a temporary meeting point between planetary processes and human experience.
The resulting environment is a computational dynamic sculpture: an atmospheric condition constructed from data, reconfigured in real time and experienced at the scale of the body.
At its core, Atmospheric Seeing considers how technology can shift the scale of perception, allowing something ordinarily too vast and distant to become intimate, tangible and present.
